Reading Buddies

There is great excitement and enthusiasm at Tollcross  on a Friday morning when P6/7 pupils get together with their P1 Reading Buddies. P6/7 pupils have been supporting younger pupils by sharing stories, listening to reading and sharing reading strategies. Really lovely to see pupils learning together,  working collaboratively and sharing their favourite books.

Health Week @ Tollcross

Health Week 2013 (16/4/13 to 19/4/13)

‘Inspire-Aspire The Legacy of London 2012’

Members of the Health Committee have been busy planning lots of fun activities for next week’s Health Week.  Classes will get the opportunity to take part in either football, cheerleading, tennis or rugby sessions with specialist coaches.  We will be awarding bronze, silver and gold prizes to children in the nursery to P4 for designing a poster showing their favourite sport.  Children in P5-7 will be taking part in their own special poster competition and the winning pupil from Tollcross will get the opportunity to meet Katherine Grainger CBE at an awards ceremony in Glasgow.  The school will also receive an award for Olympic Legacy Learning!

On Friday morning, a fitness trail will be organised for infant classes and a Fun Run for upper classes.  Pupils are invited to come dressed in sports wear throughout the week!

Outdoor PE Project – Update

P6/7 were out at the Canal Basin this morning to test the outdoor PE route they have designed. Some changes needed to be made and they hope to have the route ready soon. Kevin Brown, one of the lead officers in PE for the city, will be visiting Tollcross on Tuesday (16/4/13) to talk to P6/7 and to have a look at the PE route they have designed. This is a very exciting project which will benefit our school and local community.

Waste Awareness at Tollcross Primary

wastebuster.jpgWe have organised some exciting activities to make Tollcross pupils more waste aware. This week we have a whole school competition to design a label for our new outdoor bins. The winning design will go on all the new outdoor bins in the playground. All classes will be involved in an eco activity on Friday morning (12/4/13) and everyone should try to wear something green. Change Works will be coming along to our school assembly next Thursday (18/4/13) to talk to pupils about Waste Awareness, following the assembly P5/6 and P6/7 will participate in a Waste Audit Workshop. We are working hard to make Tollcross Primary greener.

A Warm Welcome to our new Janitor James Newman

20130409-093418.jpg

We would like to introduce our new janitor James Newman. James worked as a janitor in Australia for six months and most recently worked at St Mary’s Primary in East London Street.  He is looking forward to getting to know everyone and has found Tollcross to be a very friendly and welcoming school. James likes the outdoors and enjoys hill walking and kayaking. Please say hello to James when you see him around our school. A big Tollcross welcome from all the staff, parents and pupils.
